American
Friends Service Organization provides global opportunities
for those interested in volunteering. You can get involved with any one
of their projects. One of their projects “The Emergency and Material Assistance
Project” provides material resources to people in need, both locally and
internationally.
Cross
Cultural Solutions offers short-term and long-term programs
which give volunteers from all over the world the opportunity to come face
to face with global issues and become part of productive solutions. We
have developed close partnerships with exceptional social service pioneers
in our host countries. Together we have targeted health care, education

The International
Youth Christian Exchange hosts volunteer exchange programs
in countries around the world. You can search by country for volunteer
opportunities that can also be flexible with attending school.
Jesuit
Volunteers Corps (JVC) serve the homeless, the unemployed,
refugees, people with AIDS, the elderly, street youth, abused women and
children, the mentally ill and the developmentally disabled, in both the
United States and the rest of the world. Participants interested in volunteering
in the United States are required to volunteer for one year and for international
service, participants are required two years. JVC has programs around the
world in Latin America, Africa, Asia, Pacific Island, and India. Volunteers
are given room and board, travel, medical insurance, and a monthly stipend.
International volunteers are encouraged to raise about $2500 to help with
expenses. Domestic volunteers do not need to contribute funds. Qualified
student loans can be deferred; certain domestic assignments qualify for
AmeriCorps educational grant of $4725 to be used for loan payments or future
tuition at the completion of service. As a faith-based organization, Catholics
are encouraged to apply.
As
a leading federation of international, U.S.–based charities,
International Service Agencies (ISA) works efficiently and
effectively to support programs that touch the 206 million lives affected
by poverty, disaster and neglect each year. ISA members get results by
providing the tools for people to help themselves.

March 1, 1961 President Kennedy signed an executive order establishing
the Peace
Corps. Since its inception, Peacecorps has been a pioneer
in international volunteering. This global organization requires two years

provides a database of international volunteer programs. Searches can be
done by type of program or by country or region.
Volunteers
for Peace offers over 2000 affordable short-term voluntary
service projects in 80 countries, including Armenia, Belgium, China, Ecuador,
England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Mongolia, South
Africa, South Korea, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Turkey, Uganda, United States,
Wales and Zambia. Work project include: construction/renovation of low-income
housing or community buildings, historic preservation, archeology; environmental
projects such as trail building, environmental education, wildlife surveying,
park maintenance, organic farming; social services working with children,
the elderly, physically or mentally handicapped, refugees, minority groups,
drug/alcohol recovery, AIDS education; arts projects or festivals. Most
camps are limited to ages 18 and up, a few for ages 15 and up. Workcamps
are scheduled for 2-3 weeks each May-Sept. A $200 registration fee per
camp covers the program including room and board.
Africa
The Aang
Serian Peace Village (the name means "House of Peace" in
the Maasai language) is a registered Tanzanian cultural association set
up to promote, preserve and document the indigenous cultures of East Africa,
especially that of the Maasai people, and to uphold the rights of Indigenous
Peoples. This organization offers various volunteer opportunities that
range from three weeks to three months.
Cross
Cultural Solutions offers three week to six month program
stays in Ghana, West Africa. Home to rainforests, ancient art and alternative
medicine, Ghana is a land steeped in tradition. While slave forts on the
coast recall a tragic age in West African history, modern-day Ghana stands
proud as one of the most politically stable and culturally rich nations
on the continent. Every month of the year, volunteers work in the villages
surrounding the town of Ho in the eastern plains. In their free time, volunteers
may explore this fascinating country or venture to other parts of Africa.
Most common placements are in the Health, Education and Business sectors.
Voluntary
Workcamps Association of Ghana (VOLU) hosts 6 week International
Volunteering Excursions in Ghana, West Africa. The organized camps change
purpose and location yearly, this year including the following topics:
community developments, youth work, HIV/AIDS training and prevention. VOLU
offers workshops during summer and winter months and charges between $200-
$250 for the workshop, plus airfare. VOLU declares each project is rooted
within the community and takes its directives from community members.
The
Americas
CARE
Corps is an educational travel and international volunteer
program for people interested in learning about sustainable solutions to
poverty. CARE Corps volunteers work in partnership with local people in
a variety of community development projects. This unique program offers
exciting hands-on work opportunities, meaningful cultural exchange with
a Peruvian community, and enriching educational sessions about global issues
and CARE. Volunteers live in a CARE Corps house in the middle of the colonial
town of Ayacucho where the indigenous Quechua culture still thrives. Three-week
sessions are offered every month. Volunteer projects typically include:
health care, nutrition, education, hygiene training, literacy, cultural
exchange, non-formal education, health education, conservation, community
development, income-generation activities, skill/vocational and computer
skills training, sports training, nursery care, child care, and art and
crafts.

Cross
Cultural Solutions has developed a new volunteer program
in Brazil. In the city of Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia and the
country's center for Afro-Brazilian culture, volunteers will assist teachers
with child care at a community school, work with a music program for street
children, teach conversational English, provide health care, and work to
prevent HIV/AIDS among teenagers. In their free time, program participants
may explore the city or the beaches. Guest speakers, Portuguese classes
and cooking lessons will be available. Programs range from 2 weeks to 6
months. The first volunteers will arrive in Salvador on October 20, 2002.

In Villa El Salvador, the shantytown in Lima where our work is centered,
provides a diverse experience in volunteering including: caring and developing
activities for neglected elderly, teaching English, arts and crafts, sports,
in shantytown schools and after-school centers, taking care of infants
and small children in day care centers, taking care of infants, children
and teenagers with mental & physical disabilities in orphanages and
special education center, observing and assisting with local medical practice
and physical therapy activities, and developing educational and recreational
interventions for former street children and teenagers in community housing
projects.

The International
Christian Youth Exchange is a non-profit youth exchange
organization that offers opportunities to young people all over the world
to spend a semester or a year living abroad with a family or host-project
and being involved in voluntary service or attending school Projects in
Honduras include working with homeless and street children, disabled, ecological
projects, children's rights, women organizations, literacy programs, and
with NGOs active in rural development. Attendance of university courses
is allowed provided it does not interfere with voluntary service.

Asia
Since
October 2000, Cross-Cultural
Solutions' volunteers have had the opportunity to experience
the people and rich culture of China. Our volunteers teach English in community
schools and at a local community service center for a duration of three
to eight weeks. Duties vary slightly with each placement, but the emphasis
will be placed on conversational English with students at the primary and
secondary levels.

in Asia. Here, a wide variety of resources are made available to those
seeking volunteer opportunities as well as those who have volunteered in
the past.
With Cross
Cultural Solutions, volunteers have the opportunity to experience
two sides of Indian life: the urban hustle and bustle of New Delhi's shantytowns,
or the rural villages of the Indian Himalayan foothills. Throughout the
year, volunteers work with over a dozen dynamic grass-roots organizations
and have the opportunity to go on cultural excursions. The program lasts
from 3 weeks to six months per year.
The Open
Directory Project provides links for students to get
involved in volunteering in Asia. Projects span Tibet, China, and Japan,
and a number of skills are needed.
Cross-Cultural
Solutions has developed a new volunteer program in Thailand,
starting the fall of 2002. Volunteers will be working in the community
of Thonburi, 45 minutes outside of Bangkok. Volunteer placements will include
teaching basic computer literacy courses, doing arts and crafts and playing
sports with children, caring for toddlers in daycare centers, doing HIV/AIDS
education and outreach, assisting with the development of infrastructure
for persons with disabilities, and more! Programs range from 3 weeks to
6 months.

Solutions has been invited by several orphanages in the
town of Yaroslavl to come and work with the children. Our volunteers will
assist in many different areas, including mentoring, teaching English,
arts and crafts or playing games and sports with the children, but the
most important element will be to give them the love and attention that
they need.

Youth
Action for Peace offers a volunteer program in the West
Bank. : YAP is an international youth movement, with branches main in Europe
and associated group and partner organization elsewhere worldwide. YAP
offers Volunteer exchanges, Seminars and training, and Peace and Development
Education.
Middle
East International Energy Fund seeks volunteers for the
Bahrain office with the following skills: database design, Web page design,
special events planning, public speaking, public relations, editing, fundraising
The area focused on is economic development, education, energy conservation,
and the environment. Volunteers will assist the President of the Middle

The Institute
for Volunteering Research, funded by the Community Fund,
will consider the relationship between volunteering and social exclusion.
The research will concentrate on three groups for whom social exclusion
can be an issue – Black and ethnic minority communities, disabled people,
and offenders and ex-offenders. Fieldwork will be located in three geographical
areas, selected for their contrasting characteristics. The areas are East
